Summer isn’t over yet, and even if my inbox is telling me otherwise—the holiday gift guide pitches are already coming in, not to mention fall previews are well underway (IYKYK, fashion people!)—I am taking every last bit of the hot, humid season until I can’t anymore. That’ll probably be October here in NYC, and honestly, that gives me more than enough time. Bless!
Given the fact that I’m living summer to its fullest, I’m also keen on trying all of summer 2024’s biggest trends, even those I never thought I would wear. I hated Birkenstocks until I was 15. Now, I swear by them as my everyday, throw-on-and-go shoes that have saved my feet, especially when I’m struggling with blisters on my heels from shoes I shouldn’t have worn. We’ve all been there. I also never thought I would even consider trying hiking sandals for anything other than, well, hikes, but a slew of celebs have made the “ugly” dad sandal feel decidedly more fashion than function, and I’m now on board—in fact, I have been for a while now.
Gigi Hadid was the latest to wear her hiking sandals off-trail—and she’s done so on multiple occasions—but it’s a Katie Holmes sighting that still lives rent free in my head. The actress was photographed out in New York City last summer, in a flowy white skirt, oversized gray sweater, and white Teva x Chloé sandals that sold out swifty after that. Her designer pair felt trendy but still had all the elements of the comfy hiking sandal: a treaded, supportive sole, adjustable nylon straps, and that all-around breathable design.
