Wheeler’s circulation problems were caused by a combination of pre-existing conditions, including:
Focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, a hereditary condition
Leg injuries from martial arts training
A car crash in 1994
A kidney transplant in 2003
Wheeler said the amputation was necessary because the circulation issues in his leg had become life-threatening. He also said the pain was so great that he couldn’t walk very far.
