The endlessly charming, quirky, and trailblazing actress who lit up the screen for over five decades has died at 79 in California.

With her floppy hats, sharp suits, and a voice full of warmth and wit, Keaton became a cultural force in the 1970s. She broke through as Kay Adams in The Godfather and defined an era with Annie Hall, a performance that won her an Oscar and turned her into a fashion icon. She brought the same magic to later hits like The First Wives Club, Something’s Gotta Give, and the Book Club films, embracing age and authenticity with effortless grace.

Born Diane Hall in Los Angeles in 1946, she was the eldest of four children. Her father was a civil engineer, and her mother—whose maiden name, Keaton, she later adopted—was a homemaker. On and off the screen, she remained unapologetically herself: an actress, a style rebel, and a true original who left her mark with every role she played.
