On May 1, 20-year-old Kavan Markwood of McKeesport, PA, fell 21 feet from the stands at PNC Park during the Pirates vs. Cubs game. The accident happened in Section 142 just after Andrew McCutchen’s go-ahead double. Markwood, celebrating shirtless and pouring beer on himself, lost balance and fell over a 36-inch railing, landing on the right-field warning track.
Emergency crews quickly responded, and he was transported to Allegheny General Hospital in critical condition. Authorities are treating the incident as accidental.
A former linebacker at Walsh and Wheeling universities, Markwood was known for his character and athleticism. Community members and the Pirates organization have expressed deep concern and support.
“This was one of the most difficult moments many of us have ever experienced,” said Pirates chairman Bob Nutting.
As fans pray for his recovery, Kavan’s resilience and community support shine as beacons of hope.
