My family called my job “playing nurse.” At my brother’s lake party, his son went under the water. I had him breathing before the ambulance arrived. At the hospital, the ER chief saw me and stopped: “Doctor — why are you in the waiting room?” Mom’s head snapped toward me. She’d introduced me as the babysitter.

My husband asked me for a divorce out. of nowhere. No warning. No fight. No buildup. Just, ‘I want a divorce.’ I asked why. He said, ‘I’ve been unhappy.’ I said, ‘Since when?’

I came home from my final ultrasound to find my belongings packed in garbage bags on the front lawn. My husband stood in the doorway with his newly divorced sister. “”She needs the master bedroom more than you do. You can sleep in the basement,”” he said coldly. When I tried to push past them into my own home, his sister stuck her foot out. I tumbled backward down the steep porch steps, my heavy belly taking the brunt of the final impact. As the world started fading to black, the last thing I saw was them shutting the front door on me.

2 months before I told my husband I was pregnant, he had a secret vasectomy. he accused me of cheating, drained our bank accounts, and left me for his mistress. He brought her to my first ultrasound to force me to sign away our house. “Tell me how far along this bastard is,” he sneered at the doctor. His mistress smirked. The doctor stared at the monitor, then looked dead at him. At that moment, I still didn’t know the most devastating shock was waiting for me at the ultrasound.

I was 10 when my mom married, had her ” perfect son,” and dumped me like a mistake. Grandma took me in without blinking she said love doesn’t pick favorites. At 11, we visited for a “family dinner.” Mom doted on my brother and barely looked at me. I gave her a handmade card, but she handed it to him. I froze. “I got that for you.’ She waved me off. “OH, WHAT WOULD! NEED IT FOR? I HAVE EVERYTHING I WANT.”
